A Study on Heavy Metals in Urban Urban Rivers and Streams

Abstract
A study was carried out to known the pollution state with heavy metals of the river and stream waters in the Seoul are from July 25 to November 30,1968. iron, total chrome, copper, manganese, lead and arsenics were determined with the samples from 18 points selected and the results were summarized as follows:
1. Iron: In Han River the concentrations of iron increased from 0.59ppm at Kwanjang Bridge to 0.99ppm at Han River Bridge No. 2 as the flow went down except 1.96ppm at Bokwangdong where highly polluted Chungge Stream ran into. The highest concentration was found at Kal Stream (14.85ppm) while the lowest at Bongkuksa Stream(0.20ppm).
2. Total Chrome: Total chrome increased from 0.006ppm at Kwangjang Bridge to 0.023ppm at Bokwangdong in Han River. The highest concentration was determined at Kal Stream(2.722ppm) while total chrome was found in trace at Taedong Stream.
3. Copper: The concentration of copper in Han River were in the range of 0.29ppm to 0.88ppm. The highest concentration was estimated at Kal Stream(6.99ppm) while copper was not detected at Bongkuksa Stream.
4. Manganese: The concentration of manganese in Han River increased from 0.01ppm at Kwangjang Bridge to 0.07ppm at Han River Bridge No 1. The highest concentration was at Sungdong Bridge(1.81ppm) while manganese was not detected Bongkuksa Stream.
5. Lead: Lead in Han River increase from 0.02ppm at Kwangjang Bridge to 0.10 ppm at Han River Bridge No. 2 as the flow ran down. The highest concentration was detected at Kal Stream(0.93ppm) while lead was not detected at Bongkuksa Stream.
6. Arsenics: The concentration of arsenics were 0.015ppm at Kal Stream, 0.009ppm at Sungbuk Stream 0.007ppm at Chungge Stream, 0.006ppm at Chungryang Bridge, 0.005ppm at Wonhyo Bridge and 0.003ppm at Wolkok Stream and Anyang Stream respectively, while arsenics was found in trace at the remaining 11 points.
7. The highest concentrations of five heavy metals (Fe, Cr, Cu, Pb, As) among six was detected at Kal Stream while Bongkuksa Stream showed the lowest pollution with heavy metals.
